Globe Run4Home redefines activism

Cebuano triathlete champion Noy Jopson endorses Globe  annual charity run

A big name in the athletic scene, Cebuano Noy Jopson Is most known for grabbing the first Cobra Ironman title, which he skillfully set at 4:21.27. This coming March 25, 2012 in Cebu City, he will be joining the upcoming Globe Run4Home and has openly expressed his endorsement for the values that the event espouses.

“I’m really excited! Globe Run4Home is dedicated to not just 1 but 4 organizations that are at the forefront of their advocacies.  It’s not often that you get to combine what you love with giving back,” shares Noy when asked about his sentiments regarding the event.

A lover of the outdoors and sports, Noy has successfully kept himself busy and immersed in the world of fitness. His fire for running started at the early age of 9. Even during his younger years, his titles number to many and include prestigious awards. Among those that he championed are Asian Cup Junior in 1995 and the Philippine Enduraman Champion. He is also a 3-time National Champ and a record holder for Olympic Distance.

His decision to be an athlete is a deliberate one. Noy closely grew up with civic awareness and responsibility, as his father is the well-known political activist Edgar Jopson. The late Jopson was a key mover during the period of civil unrest or the First Quarter Storm in the 1970s. He was the president of National Union Students of the Philippines and also bears the recognition Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines.

“Throughout my life, it was my intention and decision to shy away from activism. I used to believe that it was not worth the separation or the loss of a loved one. Now, I realize that it’s not wrong to push for what my parents fought and died for: social justice and human rights,” declares the triathlete.

Noy recounts his younger days when he was hounded left and right with opportunities to stand up for various causes. He instead kept himself busy with training to excuse him from said activities.

“If there’s a chance to keep running, join triathlons, promote fitness, and celebrate health while helping our country, why not?,” Noy happily concludes.

The funds raised from this year’s Globe Run4Home will be funneled to support the projects of Gawad Kalinga and Habitat for Humanity Philippines with a particular focus on addressing the needs of Filipinos victimized by Typhoon Sendong. As the environment is as well a home, Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation and Philippine Tarsier Foundation also join this year’s roster of beneficiaries.

Those who cannot participate in the run but wanted to donate to their chosen beneficiary can do so via Globe GCASH.  All they have to do is text the following:  For Philippine Tarsier Foundation –   DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <TARSIER> and send to 2882;  Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <CEBUBIO> and send to 2882; Habitat for Humanity –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <HABITAT> and send to 2882; Gawad Kalinga –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <GK> and send to 2882.

This event will bring developers, programmers, marketing professionals and business executives under one roof for a tedious, idea-squeezing and time-challenging 54-hour of meet-up, team-building and idea presentation to the big guns from Silicon Valley.

Of course, local personalities are also invited and included in the panel of judges.

To know more about the Startup Weekend, social media mommy blogger, owner of Third Team Media and member of Cebu Bloggers Society, Inc., Fleire Castro brings to us this press release.

Startup Weekend is a 54 hour startup event that provides the networking, resources, and incentives for individuals and teams to go from idea to launch. Startup Weekend’s motto: NO TALK, ALL ACTION. START YOUR BUSINESS! In conjunction with the two entrepreneurs out of Seattle, WA – that were crazy enough to start this whole thing, and the more than 300 events that have been hosted in cities worldwide, we are our own community of passionate entrepreneurs on a mission to help others like us and facilitate innovation in Cebu by organizing the first ever Startup Weekend Cebu on May 11 – 13, 2012 @ UP Cebu.

What Actually Happens During Startup Weekend

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts and the Startup Weekend Cebu Winner is crowned by the panel of judges.  Essentially, building their company in 54HRS.

Who are the crowd

Startup Weekend’s community consists primarily of passionate current and future entrepreneurs with ideas for new ventures mostly for web or mobile. These are the creative and influential workers of Cebu.  Startup Weekenders are the movers and shakers of the digital age. They are: No Talk. All Action. In addition to the attendees, we have key sponsors like Globe, Microsoft, and other A list companies who will have delegates in attendance. We are lining up key Filipino mentors who have successful startups and can provide entrepreneurial insight and inspiration to our attendees. We’ve also arranged to have a team of Venture Capitalists (VCs) from Silicon Valley be in attendance at the event and serve as judges on our panel. Last but certainly not least, we are inviting You, which means you will have access to this amazing lineup of talent.

You will get to experience what SWCebu is all about (free snacks of course) and you’ll be able to interview the organizers, judges and mentors. You are encouraged to write your pre-event entry as a participant of the blogging contest. Further details will be forwarded by event marketing head Fleire Castro of Third Team Media.

Startup Weekend Cebu is going to leave a lasting impression on the community and we want You  to be a part! We hope to be working with You, and please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dave Overton & Fleire Castro

Globe Run4Home 2012 races responsibly

Now on its fourth year, the much-awaited Globe Run4Home has always been known for its socially responsible component. Proceeds of the fun runs in the last three years have been donated to partner beneficiaries with missions to attend to the society’s need for quality homes.

Turning corporate accountability up several notches higher, Globe Run4Home 2012 welcomes and seeks to comply with the set of race coordination guidelines that has recently been created for the local government of Cebu City. A group of race organizers, Cebu City Sports Commission, and Cebu City Traffic Operations Management got together to ideate on the various parameters that will now be required of race organizers in an effort to protect runners from fly-by-night schemes.

“We understand – and fully agree – that the journey to the finish line is still part of the entire socially responsible experience. As such, we are delighted to have the expert assistance of Event King, Inc. in putting Globe Run4Home 2012 together.  We excitedly look forward to the learning, relationships, and fun that we know Cebu will add to the history of Run4Home,” said Yoly C. Crisanto, Globe Head for Corporate Communications.

“We admire the passion and unwavering commitment of Globe to serve communities in need through Run 4 Home. Globe Run4Home has gained a steady following through the years not only because of the purpose their individual runs serve but also because of the actual service each runner has been given. As Globe’s official race partner, we look forward to upholding, if not improving, the fun run experience this coming race,” said Michael James Galura, president of EventKing Corporation.

Proceeds from Globe Run4Home 2012 will be channeled to four non-government organizations — Gawad Kalinga (GK), Habitat for Humanity Philippines (HFHP), Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (CBCF) and Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Inc. (PTF).  GK and HFHP both aim to provide housing development projects for their respective communities nationwide. Urgent assistance will also be given to the victims of recent catastrophe Typhoon Sendong.

On the other hand, CBCF strives to empower the communities of key biodiversity areas with transformative solutions for taking being accountable for their wealthy ecosystems. Sinulog is the Grandest Festival in the Philippines

Tell me other festivals in the Philippines that can attract a crowd in millions.  I think only Sinulog can do it.

The Black Nazarene procession in Manila can draw in millions of crowd. But that is a religious event and yes, it is strictly religious– not that I know many of it since I haven’t even experienced joining that kind of event in Manila. But the Sinulog is far different for it mixes religion, devotion, fun and street party.

I’d say you have missed one half of your life if you haven’t joined the crowd in Sinulog. You don’t really have to join the choreographed street dancing. Let those dancers do it. However, if you really want to dance for Sinulog, then attend the last novena mass after the procession on the eve of the Sinulog day. You can surely dance with other churchgoers and be in the drumbeat with the priests and other devotees.

Why I say Sinulog is the grandest festival in the Philippines?

It’s a yearly tradition in Cebu to hold the festival event in honor of Sto. Nino.  And almost every year, the festival is getting grander. Not only Cebuanos can enjoy Sinulog. Local tourists from all over the Philippines and even foreign ones have to join Sinulog because it really is Super Fun in Sinulog.

Even from other locales in the Philippines, they join the Sinulog parade to feature their dancing routines. There are contingents from Lanao del Norte, Dumaguete and other parts in the Philippines. Hence, the Sinulog dancing is not strictly for Cebu-based contingents. That’s one of the foremost reasons why Sinulog is the grandest parade because even non-Cebu contingents enter the dancing scene to show their veneration to the Child Jesus.

But Sinulog is not only a religious event. If you venture out on the streets of Cebu, many businessmen consider it as an opportunity for business. Yes, it’s sad to say this but Sinulog is an event for commercialism. But do we have to deny this fact? It should not be for it is part of the development when there is a big festival such as this in your area especially in the area where I was born and raised for over 20 years of my life.

Just to plug-in: tonight is the special Sinulog Tattoo party from Globe at Ayala Terraces. Expect more happenings at the party including the fireworks display in Ayala, which is already a yearly tradition during Sinulog.

Globe-powered TATTOO unleashes the new faces of global resistance

The resistance begins now. Globe-powered Tattoo starts a new revolution as it becomes faster, bolder and more powerful than ever. Armed with topnotch innovation, Tattoo revolts against uniformity, fights against mediocrity and breaks through limitations all with stronger bandwidth, better devices, wider reach and faster speeds at unbeatable value.

As the #1 most preferred broadband in the country, Tattoo breaks barriers and overcomes limits. Impossibilities are set aside as Tattoo gives every user an out-of-the-box experience – Resisting the tired and traditional broadband model.  With a new and empowered broadband that packs a punch in a super sleek and stylish package, Tattoo reveals the new and progressive face of internet technology.

Pushing the bounds of connectivity, Tattoo has taken on the challenge that continues to make Filipinos more mobile, powerful, global and consequentially, revolutionary. Get ready for a new domination in your broadband – with three reasons to resist the slow and unreliable broadband internet that plagues the market. With an empowered prepaid and postpaid portfolio Tattoo outdoes competition yet again in etching a permanent mark in the minds of the young, mobile, and techno-savvy. More to these, it is their new brand ambassadors, it seems, that causes the most buzz in the beeline.

Proof that Tattoo packs a punch in providing value for money for the best deals, the “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire raises his fist in resisting mediocrity with the tired old broadband we all have been accustomed to. The current World Bantamweight Champion has risen from jaggedness and aims for prominence. And putting up the same stance for the country’s #1 most preferred broadband, Tattoo promises internet service that is uninterrupted, with strong and powerful signals at unbeatable speeds.

With his perma-lined eyes, black swept hair, and his melodic howl, vocalist Miggy Chavez has raised a strong following for a religion he calls Chicosci. Armed with hypnotic guitar riffs, surreal lyrics, and, Chavez’s addicting vocal styling, Chicosci has reared a legion of head-banging cronies for their “Vampire Social Club”, a historic hit for Philippine rock. And with Tattoo on his side, Miggy Chavez can take his ‘vampiric’ social network following to virally fanatic proportions, with reliable bandwidths designed for instant updates, super-sonic uploads and downloads, and unlimited interaction. Backed up by Tattoo, Miggy breaks through limitations caused by slow, unreliable internet access, as he puts his rock-cult status in the burning spotlight and paves the way to musical innovations that would bring the Pinoy sound to the international arena.

Model marvel Georgina Wilson on the other hand, with her multi-faceted persona has invaded the international fashion consciousness and left an indelible mark all her own. From the face that launched a thousand billboards, to her display of Filipina beauty in the global stream of America’s Next Top Model, Georgina has proved, time and again, that the Pinay supermodel is more than just a pretty face. Above all, professionalism, personality, and panache transcend a model into an invading icon.

And this resistance against Uniformity of modeling stereotypes has transformed Wilson into a global household name, her tweets instantly becoming the first words on anything from fashion, social graces, to the elusive pursuits of the finer things in life. Her @iloveGeorgina Twitter account has caused quite a social network traffic this holiday season when Georgina asked her followers “What will you RESIST this 2012?” And judging from the amount of replies she received, her words fronted by a pretty picture will always be irresistible. With Grace, Glamour, intelligible Grasp, and a Gorgeous face, Georgina Wilson displays the 4G that could launch a thousand hits, likes, and followings, and that is exactly what Tattoo does with its new generation Superstick, that outfits 4G in a super sleek and stylish package.

Tattoo challenges you to RESIST all your old notions of what your broadband can be. It is time to RESIST the undependable, and start living your connected lives without limits, as it takes you to the new generation of global broadband domination.

Join the resistance and choose your weapon, visit www.tattoo.globe.com.ph

Super Fun Sinulog with Globe

As much as I experienced exhaustion being in the procession, painstakingly trudging for the Child Jesus and getting jam-packed in over a million people in a crowd of devotees, fun was never dull on the eve of Sinulog.

Yes, it was really fun despite the tiresome and exhilarating march during the procession. But after the mass that concluded the over 5 hours of procession, churchgoers and devotees danced the Sinulog beat with vigor. Even I forgot the exhaustion when I saw thousands in the crowd, dancing and singing the official Sinulog song. I couldn’t even help myself but also danced with them.  But this is to be expected in Sinulog where devotion and fun are among the elements of the festival. There’s devotion and then glee just like in Globe.

This Sinulog season of 2012, the super fun never stops in Globe. One of the big telco companies in the Philippines is in rhythm with the drumbeat of Sinulog this 2012.

The super stick that is getting more powerful through innovation can be grabbed while you’re in the streets of Cebu City during Sinulog. Globe with its  Tattoo brand and broadband stick has stationed different booths where the Sinulog beat is throbbing and where the music that  makes you dance with the Sinulog participants in tribal and colorful costumes never ceases to wane—of course, only during the Sinulog day.

Although I failed to get pictures of Globe tattoo booths as I joined the procession, I still was impressed, nonetheless, on how Globe takes part and be in one beat with the Cebuanos, the tourists and whole Sinulog crowd.

Globe also has a lot of activities in store for Cebu and the Sinulog crowd.

There’s Super Fun with Globe  this Sinulog… the way the fun never stops until the wee of dawn during the Sinulog day– from the religious masses in the morning, the Sinulog parade the whole day and the parties from dusk ‘til dawn. Of course, the party already started during the eve of Sinulog. There’s no other religious events where even the party can be held within the holy grounds of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino.
