Tatt Awards 2012

In a post event held last week of April, Tattoo, the #1 broadband in the Philippines continues to recognize social media icons, shakers and influencers with its prestigious Tatt Awards. The award giving body that stared last year is the first ever giving body that awards online icons, shakers and influencers who have “inspired, led, influenced and sparked changes in the world in a positive way.”

The first-ever Tatt awards held last year gathered and shone the limelight on technophiles, video vamps and passionate advocates of change.

Here is a popular Tatt Awards 2o12 Video by Petra Halimuyak:

This is not a mere popularity contest but a recognition of people who used the social media space to share what they are most passionate about and, in the process, created positive influence and stirred action among people,” he adds.

Tatt Awards 2012 also proudly reveals its new Tatt Council, a group of celebrated online thought-leaders led by Ronquillo, that will collectively serve as judges to determine the winners in the different categories.

Cebu False Tsunami Alert Could Qualify for an April Fool’s Day Prank

If February 6 would have been April 1, then  the Tsunami Alert would be qualified as an April Fool’s Prank.

Looking back on February 6 when many Cebuanos feared for their lives because of the tsunami alert, I can’t help but take that event as very memorable, for it showed the  vulnerability of Cebuanos to pranks. The February 6 tsunami alert would have been one of the hair-raising events that occurred in Cebu.

I also have learned that there can be no way the eastern side of Cebu would ever experience a tsunami or a big tidal wave. The Danajon Bank, the Double Barrier Reef, which I have known from an event in February 27 of this year, is a sea wonder that could serve as barricade for a tsunami. With this reef located in the eastern side of Cebu encompassed by Olango island, Camotes island and Bohol,   Cebu is very unlikely to be hit by a tsunami.

And now, tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. It may be mean to do this, but if I’d be honest,  I would consider th Cebu tsunami alert as an April Fool’s prank if only February 6 was April 1.

GoodBlog Awards calls for more Filipino Bloggers to Spread “Good” in the Blogosphere

The Best Cebu Blogs Awards is the known award-giving body for Cebuano bloggers. The Philippine Blog Awards is also one and it covers a regional and national scope.

This time around, there is another blog awards that recognize bloggers based on the good  they want to spread in the blogosphere.

GoodBlog Awards calls in the Filipino bloggers to spread the “good” and inspire others to do the same using the blogs as the tools for propagating the goodness to others. However, what I’ve mentioned does not only restrict to that.

The organizers of GoodBlog Awards have another real take on that:

“When it comes to the GoodBlogAwards, our definition revolves around the theme for you to “Spark & Share”.

We’re looking for blogs that have the potential to ignite ideas that can enhance our lives and impart some form of spiritual growth. We consider a blog “good” if it inspires others to reach out, take the extra step and pave the way forward to improve the quality of life for a single individual, or the nation as a whole. Show us how ordinary people can do extraordinary things!”

The organizers of this blog want to spread this awareness, of course, using our site and the blogs of our members. We can’t say no to something that can deliver a big impact to the blogosphere, not just only here in Cebu but in other areas of the Philippines as well.

Gadgets Magazine spearheads in organizing GoodBlog Awards with the help of Cocacola and other companies.

For Cebu Bloggers who wish to join this contest–yes, it is contest — I would like you to check the page of the GoodBlog Awards website.

I hope more Cebu Bloggers and not just here in Cebu but in other parts of the Philippines as well to join this.

Your blogpost entry can serve as your contribution in bringing more “good” to the society and helping others to spark ideas for the good of the society.

You can also like GoodBlogAwards on Facebook and get more updates about the awarding event.

Unilab Ideas Positive Encourages Youths To Team Up and Be the Game Changers for Healthier Communities

Have a problem in your community that you want to solve and resolve? Are the roadside canals of your village too stinky or too open and dangerous for pedestrians? Is your community or neighboring village experiencing environmental breakouts making the villagers and residential households susceptible to flashfloods and, possibly, epidemic?

Do you have concerns in the community that you want to resolve immediately but would require much greater voice or means for you to be heard and recognized?

Malnutrition, poor sanitation, polluted canals and waterways and, not to forget, impoverished housing are the by-products of industrial revolution. These ill-factors can lead to a much bigger problem in which it would take greater time and loads of resources to ease and resolve the crisis.

Societal problems arise because of human negligence and complacency. However, this does not mean that all humans are the same. But perhaps, of a greater multitude committing the similar sins, many innocent lives are affected.   Cliché as it may seem, there is no problem that cannot be resolved. And yes, this is where resolution and actions come into play.

Youths of today can play a big role in transforming a community into a more livable one. Despite the notion of degrading morality and liberal attitudes among youths, still there are youngsters who initiate creative concepts and put them to actions. As young as college students, engaging in activities for social concerns is a noble undertaking, if coupled with the sincerest attitude in doing the outreach programs.

Because of the transition of college students from teens to adulthood, their mindset tends to switch from just fun to serious fun. And yes, there is more fun in indulging in activities intended for social responsibility.

I believe that college students possess the right attitude to initiate ideas that can be beneficial for the community. I highly and plausibly agree to that because I was once a college student.

Hence, it is no wonder that Unilab is encouraging college students to be the drivers of change in their respective communities and to be the problem-solvers and game changers, if I may add.

Through the campaign, Unilab Ideas Positive, 15 communities from different parts and regions in the Philippines will be transformed. But how can this possible?

With the help of college students from different colleges and universities in the Philippines, 15 communities will experience changes and societal development. These groups of students will contribute ideas on how they can transform their communities into livelier and more livable places for happier people.

But there is more to that…

Unilab Ideas Positive is encouraging more college students to conceptualize better ideas. The best ideas garnered will be rewarded with seed money to be used for their communities. Aside from that, 15 groups of students will undergo a 3-day boot camp, training the students about social marketing and the right approaches in implementing this discipline in marketing.

Now, for college students, here’s the catch:

If you want your group to be flown to Manila, booked in a hotel with transportation and meals for free, then join the contest. You and your team will gain the privilege to attend a 3-day boot camp and be trained by social marketing gurus and expert speakers.

But first as mentioned, you must register as a group, and yes, you must be college students.

For clearer mechanics and a sample entry form, you can check this page out: http://unilabideaspositive.com/mechanics.html

Unilab Ideas Positive was launched in 2010. Last year, speakers for the boot camp included social marketing guru Dr. Ned Roberto and Efren Penaflorida, if you know him; he is the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year. Rocked Founder Gang Badoy was also one of many trainers of last year’s social marketing boot camp.

Interested college students can join by teaming up and registering at www.unilabideaspositive.com. Deadline for submission of entries is on April 16, 2012.

  2. Submit your article links to this thread in the CBSi forums.

The editors of the Content Management Committee will be the judges of this contest, and the article that bested the rest will be the winner of a Globe Tattoo 4G Stick.

Deadline of the articles will be on January 28, 2012. There’s nothing more to wait for, so go ahead and get your brains thinking and your fingers tapping — write away!

Looking past 2011 and forward to 2012

This is a New Year’s message from the president of Cebu Bloggers Society, Inc., Kevin Ray Chua.

2011 has been very fruitful for CBS and its members. More than 3 years ago, Mark Monta, Jerry Gervacio and I never realized how far this blogging organization will reach. It has gained the admiration and trust of several people and organizations with the bloggers whose dedication for the organization can never be questioned.

CBS has been complementing with the traditional media in delivering the latest information, events, tips and others to the public. Several changes have also been implemented within the organization to respond to the changing times and as we move forward, more are still coming.

As we welcome 2012, we look forward to reaching greater heights as a blogging organization dedicated in not just promoting Cebu through blogs but an entity that will lead positive change in the blogosphere.

CBS will continue to be driven by passionate members who brought to where this organization is now.

To the CBS members, thank you for being part of this organization and as we move to another chapter, may all if us have the spiritual strength to overcome all the challenges of 2012 and a grateful heart for all the blessings that God will shower us.

May good health, happiness and success be our constant partners throughout the coming year.

Happy New Year everyone!

I resist false and unverified information!

I remember an old story of how a certain news reporter failed to verify the death of a victim. He reported that the victim died in a casualty. This report came out in the newspaper the following day. You could just imagine how the victim, very much alive, was puffing red with anger as he stormed into the newsroom, waving that day’s issue of the paper with extreme vigor and demanding loudly immediate action from the editors.

This story, deemed true, was handed down from one generation of reporters to the next. Whether or not the storyteller of one generation added colors to the story that suit him or her, the message of the story drives home one loud and clear point: verifying information is important!

Other editions to the tale included an interesting sequel—the victim’s family was, to a certain extent, “harassed” by his relatives, friends, and colleagues who ironically did the verifying of information themselves to check if the victim, a quite well-known figure in the society, was really dead.

Sadly, what with the false declaration of his death printed in thousands of newspaper copies and read by thousands of subscribers, the damage was already done. The victim, while he may be recovered from the situation by now and may remember the event with a degree of forced humor, may have developed a sense of distrust towards the institutions and individuals that are supposed to be working for the truth.

For me, the sense of distrust is a huge obstacle in the effective communication process. This is a sad thought because communication, after all, is a vital part in community development, an integral factor in boosting the spirits of the people to work for their country.

Noticeably, the dynamics of communication has somewhat evolved dramatically over the past few years. Newspapers, radio, and TV are no longer the only sources of information. Each one of us can now access information through the Internet, making each one of us creators and users of information. If we are wise and responsible, we could use this information, verified by various stakeholders, to come up with the best programs that work for the poor or abused women and children or our overseas Filipino workers.

Unfortunately, many are still hounded by false and unverified information, such as money scams that raise false hopes among the poor and make them even poorer, death hoaxes that harass and violate the rights of the victims, and false information that, when verified, could put the country to shame.

Hence, as I greet the New Year in a few hours, let it be my preamble that I resist false and unverified information because I am wise, responsible, and compassionate to my fellowmen, and I want to contribute to the progress of my country.

Spreading false and unverified information should end.

How about you, what is the “mediocrity” you want to resist and hope to end? Share them in this post!

My Cebu, DOT, Smart Communications Launch Data Tagging and Guidebooks for Cebu Tourism Boost

MyCebu.Ph, in partnership with the Department of Tourism and Smart Communications, introduced three projects last December 20, 2011, at Café Elysa, Parian, Cebu City.

Sinulog 2012 Guidebook

During her opening remarks, Atty. Maria Jane Paredes, Smart Communication’s senior manager for Public Affairs-VisMin, stressed that the partnership aims to provide everyone, especially tourists, easy access on information on the culture, history, and attractions of the province.

Data Tagging with QR Codes

A new technological process called data tagging was then presented to the press through a short heritage walk within Parian. Mrs. Marlen Limpag, one of the founders of MyCebu.Ph, demonstrated how QR codes attached on key landmarks such as the Heritage of Cebu Monument, Jesuit House of 1730, and Colon Obelisk can immediately connect smart phone and tablet users to a link that provides more data about them. To make the experience more dynamic, users may view not only text but also videos and photos. Landmark visitors can also share the link in their preferred social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as check in via Foursquare.

To properly view the webpage, the user simply needs to connect through WIFI or 3G and install a QR code reader.

The organizers plan, though, to expand data tagging to also include nature parks and other attractions all over the province, like Bugasok Falls in Argao and Moalboal’s beaches.

2 Guidebooks for Cebu
Besides data tagging, MyCebu.Ph also shared 2 new guidebooks that showcase Cebu in its finest.

A Guide to Sinulog 2012—which was first launched last December 19, 2011—provides in-depth information about Cebu’s most-awaited festival as well as a host of tips on what to do, where to go, and other activities everyone can look forward to during the festivity. The guide is absolutely for free and available for download in two versions: .epub and .mobi for Kindle users.

Its corresponding QR code that directs visitors to the main download page will also be displayed in public places such as shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Another Cebu guide is on the way and will be launched in early January 2012, in time for Sinulog. It will be available in Amazon for a nominal fee but will also be free to download in MyCebu.Ph’s website.

Sinulog is Cebu’s biggest festival, attracting droves of local and foreign tourists every year. Last 2011, more than 120,000 visitors came to watch the grand parade and participate in a long list of activities. To know what’s in store in Sinulog 2012, visit Sinulog Foundation.
