Globe Run4Home redefines activism

Cebuano triathlete champion Noy Jopson endorses Globe  annual charity run

A big name in the athletic scene, Cebuano Noy Jopson Is most known for grabbing the first Cobra Ironman title, which he skillfully set at 4:21.27. This coming March 25, 2012 in Cebu City, he will be joining the upcoming Globe Run4Home and has openly expressed his endorsement for the values that the event espouses.

“I’m really excited! Globe Run4Home is dedicated to not just 1 but 4 organizations that are at the forefront of their advocacies.  It’s not often that you get to combine what you love with giving back,” shares Noy when asked about his sentiments regarding the event.

A lover of the outdoors and sports, Noy has successfully kept himself busy and immersed in the world of fitness. His fire for running started at the early age of 9. Even during his younger years, his titles number to many and include prestigious awards. Among those that he championed are Asian Cup Junior in 1995 and the Philippine Enduraman Champion. He is also a 3-time National Champ and a record holder for Olympic Distance.

His decision to be an athlete is a deliberate one. Noy closely grew up with civic awareness and responsibility, as his father is the well-known political activist Edgar Jopson. The late Jopson was a key mover during the period of civil unrest or the First Quarter Storm in the 1970s. He was the president of National Union Students of the Philippines and also bears the recognition Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines.

“Throughout my life, it was my intention and decision to shy away from activism. I used to believe that it was not worth the separation or the loss of a loved one. Now, I realize that it’s not wrong to push for what my parents fought and died for: social justice and human rights,” declares the triathlete.

Noy recounts his younger days when he was hounded left and right with opportunities to stand up for various causes. He instead kept himself busy with training to excuse him from said activities.

“If there’s a chance to keep running, join triathlons, promote fitness, and celebrate health while helping our country, why not?,” Noy happily concludes.

The funds raised from this year’s Globe Run4Home will be funneled to support the projects of Gawad Kalinga and Habitat for Humanity Philippines with a particular focus on addressing the needs of Filipinos victimized by Typhoon Sendong. As the environment is as well a home, Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation and Philippine Tarsier Foundation also join this year’s roster of beneficiaries.

Those who cannot participate in the run but wanted to donate to their chosen beneficiary can do so via Globe GCASH.  All they have to do is text the following:  For Philippine Tarsier Foundation –   DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <TARSIER> and send to 2882;  Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <CEBUBIO> and send to 2882; Habitat for Humanity –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <HABITAT> and send to 2882; Gawad Kalinga –  DONATE <space> AMOUNT <space> MPIN <space> <GK> and send to 2882.

Turning corporate accountability up several notches higher, Globe Run4Home 2012 welcomes and seeks to comply with the set of race coordination guidelines that has recently been created for the local government of Cebu City. As such, we are delighted to have the expert assistance of Event King, Inc. in putting Globe Run4Home 2012 together.  We excitedly look forward to the learning, relationships, and fun that we know Cebu will add to the history of Run4Home,” said Yoly C. As Globe’s official race partner, we look forward to upholding, if not improving, the fun run experience this coming race,” said Michael James Galura, president of EventKing Corporation.

Run for Home – Run for Gawad Kalinga

The first time I ran in a marathon was last 2010 during Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Run for Life which benefited MCCI’s medical mission and the Dasig Kabataan Foundation. This year, another marathon is gonna be held in Cebu — the Globe Run4Home, one of the biggest and most awaited running events in the country with the many innovations it pioneered in Philippine marathon history.

For this event, Globe taps previous Run4Home beneficiary Gawad Kalinga to help raise funds for its housing development project for the Sendong victims in Iligan.

The marathon is on March 25, 2012 (Sunday) at the Cebu International Convention Center with routes passing through Cebu South Coastal Road, Plaza Independencia, Sergio Osmeña Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue, with the following registration fees per category (the most affordable registration rates ever in Globe Run4Home history, making the running event more accessible to the growing running community, especially in Cebu):

  • 21K – Php700
  • 15K – Php600
  • 10K – Php500
  • 5K – Php400
  • 3K – Php300

A portion of the runners’ registration fees will be donated to their beneficiary of choice to support their respective advocacies and programs. Since I’ve been a volunteer of Gawad Kalinga for almost a year now, I pledge to run for Gawad Kalinga, and I hope you will run for GK, too! :)

To register, you may visit www.run4home.race-registration-now.com and register there, or you may go to 1st Level, Paseo de Ciudad, Ayala Center, Cebu from February 1 to March 16 and fill up the registration form, then pay in cash for individual or group (group registrants [buy 4 and get 1 free] should run in the same category). Once the registration process has been completed, a runner’s kit will be given. This includes the following items:

  • Singlet (sizes will be subject to availability)
  • D-tag (RFID Timing Chip)
  • Race Bib Number
  • Finishers medal for 21K

For more information about the marathon (call time, prizes, map, guidelines, etc.), kindly view/download this PDF file: Globe Run4Home 2012. You may also send your concerns to the contact persons indicated in the poster above.

Please do join the Globe Run4Home 2012 and run for Gawad Kalinga to help provide sustainable shelter to those in need, especially victims of Tropical Storm Sendong. :)
